(WIAT) — First and foremost, it doesn’t look like there will be any end in sight for the string of cold days and freezing cold nights. For the remainder of tonight, the sky will be cloudy and temperatures drop into the upper 20s to low 30s across central Alabama. Where the sky clears out a bit, primarily north of I-20, temperatures will be the coldest in the mid-20’s.
Tomorrow, we will see more sunshine, but that won’t exactly equate to more heat. Highs still hold in the mid-40’s. Thursday night, into Friday morning, lows drop back to around 30° under a mostly clear sky.
The big elephant in the room is the winter weather potential we could be eyeing as we round the weekend. As it stands right now, the conditions are more favorable for there to be some winter weather. One of the models that showed no signs of snow or precipitation yesterday, is now showing a bit of the white stuff moving in on Sunday. I have much more confidence that the atmosphere will have both cold air and moisture…but, the next slew of questions include: Timing? Location? Accumulation? Etc….So, to clear the air a bit, just focus on the POTENTIAL. As with most winter weather events in the south, forecasting pin point locations and exact measurements is a huge challenge, however, we can guide you into the event and hope that are prepared for a couple of. As of now, it looks like the wet weather will begin sometime late Sunday afternoon with most of the area seeing/feeling a cold rain first. Then, as this frigid polar air races in, it will begin changing over a lot of that rain to snow or sleet. By 6pm on Sunday it will likely be snowing somewhere north of I-20 and it will likely be raining south of I-20. As I’ve mentioned before, there is nothing magical about that interstate, it’s just a good point of reference.
As you ring in the new year, temperatures will get cold, so please bundle up… Also, be vigilant throughout the day. If you plan on being out for NYE, know your roads and be sure to make wise decisions whether it best to travel those roads. There will probably be a few patches of ice. Be prepared for some polar air on Monday as highs will likely stay in the low to mid 30s and by Monday night, temperatures will drop into the teens.
